2017 Self-Direction Conference Breakout Session: Increasingly, people with serious mental health conditions are self-directing their services and supports to pursue recovery goals. This session explored what self-direction looks like in the context of mental health with examples from several states participating in the Demonstration and Evaluation of Self-Direction in Behavioral Health. The session opened with an overview of how different states approach budget-setting and administration. Leaders from three states then offered more detail about what mental health self-direction looks like using data on participant expenditures and illustrative examples.
