2019 Self-Direction Conference Breakout Session: This session provides a comprehensive overview of the history of self-direction, the principles that have consistently governed self-direction, and the results that previous evaluations of self-direction have highlighted. While self-direction is a positive person-centered option, only a small percentage of participants have chosen to self-direct. Using data from National Core Indicators, the presentation includes information on the quality of life outcomes of those who are self-directing compared to those in traditional services. The presentation concludes with a discussion of self-direction internationally and the next steps needed to increase the numbers of people with I/DD who self-direct their services and supports.
