Self-Direction Then and Now: A Look at How Self-Direction Has Grown and Changed over the Past 10 Years

2019 Self-Direction Conference Plenary Session: In 2010, the National Resource Center for Participant-Directed Services (NRCPDS) published “Developing and Implementing Self-Direction Programs and Policies: A Handbook.” As would be expected, much has changed since its release. Self-direction has continued to grow and flourish, with programs in every state and the District of Columbia. However, federal legislation and regulations as developments such the shift toward managed care have brought new opportunities and challenges to self-direction and the need for a revised Handbook was clear. This session will offer a look at key changes to the Handbook that highlight significant issues moving forward, as well as illustrating the many ways self-direction has changed since the end of the original Cash & Counseling Demonstration.
